CEREC is a state-of-the-art dental system that allows our team to prepare your tooth, design your crown, and place it in a single visit. CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) cuts out the middleman — the outside dental lab — so we can handle the entire process in-house.
What Is the CEREC Process?
The CEREC process is straightforward and in many ways similar to a traditional two-appointment crown. First, we prepare your tooth just as we would for a traditional crown — after administering local anesthetic, we carefully file down the sides and biting surface so your new crown fits evenly between adjacent teeth and doesn’t interfere with your bite.
Three-Step CEREC
Once the tooth is prepared, we use CEREC’s digital infrared camera to capture a detailed image — no more uncomfortable impression material. The digital images are wirelessly transferred to CEREC’s computer, loaded with software that designs the perfect crown, incorporating shape, size, color, and the correct location and height of the cusps. A 3D visual representation of your new crown guides the design process.
The finished design is transferred to CEREC’s third component, the milling unit, where fine burs carve the crown from a single block of porcelain or composite resin — a process that takes no more than 20 minutes. Once complete, we check the design and fit before cementing your same-day crown over the prepared tooth.

Is a same-day CEREC crown as strong as a traditional lab-made crown?
Yes. CEREC restorations are milled from the same high-quality ceramic materials used in traditional crowns and offer comparable strength and durability.
How long does a CEREC appointment take?
Most same-day crown appointments take about 1 to 2 hours from start to finish, including preparation, digital scanning, milling, and placement.
Does getting a same-day crown hurt?
No. Local anesthesia is used during tooth preparation, so you shouldn’t feel pain, and any mild soreness afterward is typically manageable and short-lived.
Am I a candidate for a one-visit restoration?
Many patients needing a crown, inlay, or onlay are good candidates. We’ll evaluate your specific situation during your exam to confirm same-day treatment is the right fit.
Do I still need a temporary crown with CEREC?
No. Since your permanent crown is designed and placed the same day, there’s no need for a temporary restoration or a follow-up visit.
